UK weather conditions

FTA is in direct communication with the Highways Agency's National Traffic Control Centre and the Met Office receiving up to date weather forecasts for the UK road network. The first Traffic Update email of each day gives a weather report for that day, overnight and the following day.

FTA was instrumental in developing the Highways Agency's new severe weather warnings system, instigated following the high winds on 18 January 2007. Traffic Update recipients will receive early warnings of severe weather forecasts from the Highways Agency and Met Office. In the event of either an amber or red weather warning being issued, all members registered to receive FTA e-news will be sent the update.

Amber – make sure you and your vehicle are prepared for severe weather. Keep up to date with local weather conditions. If possible use a different route to avoid the area of severe weather.

Red – goods vehicles should find a safe place to park up and wait until the status is reduced to Amber.
