Cardiff congestion charge: Logistics UK chasing more details
Last week, Cardiff City Council announced a proposed scheme to introduce a congestion charge in the city in an attempt to reduce traffic and improve air quality.
While the scheme is focussed on addressing local air pollution, it poses commercial questions for local businesses and the wider logistics industry.
The council’s transport white paper from 2020 clearly stated that a potential future charge would be targeted at vehicles coming into Cardiff, though councillor Huw Thomas has since gone on record saying that the charge may well now apply to Cardiff residents, too.
Exactly how much drivers will be expected to pay is currently unclear, though a £2 per day charge was mooted in the aforementioned paper.
“While we support the need to address air quality in our cities,” said Jonas Keat, Policy Advisor at Logistics UK, “it’s our job to understand the impact of such measures on our members so they can plan ahead and manage future costing implications.”
“We have opened a dialogue with Cardiff City Council to this effect and will update our members with any new information we receive.”
The council’s cabinet is considering the proposals in full at a meeting today (27/4). If greenlit, changes are not likely to come into effect until 2026 at the earliest.
