Collaboration between industry and government is “essential” to help UK maximise trading opportunities, says Logistics UK
Speaking at Trade Unlocked (held in Birmingham on 20 June 2023), Logistics UK’s Director of Policy, Kate Jennings, highlighted the importance of frictionless trade to the UK economy and the need for continuous engagement with government to address the challenges surrounding decarbonisation, trade and skills that currently limit further trading and investment opportunities.
Logistics underpins every sector and, as highlighted in Logistics UK’s Logistics Report 2023, added £163 billion to the UK economy in 2021.
However, according to the World Bank’s 2023 Logistics Performance Index (LPI) report, the UK’s competitiveness in logistics has fallen to 19th on the performance indicator, a significant drop compared to the average placement of 6th between 2012 and 2018.
“Logistics plays a vital role in the nation’s economy,” said Ms Jennings, “and it’s crucial that, as an industry, we maximise trading opportunities and ensure these are as frictionless as possible.
“The sector is working hard to address issues surrounding decarbonisation and skills. However, with the publication of the Border Target Operating Model imminent, collaboration between industry and government is essential to address the further details needed by the sector and avoid costs and new potential barriers that would inhibit trade.”

In brief
VCA provides information on e11 approvals
The Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) has asked Logistics UK to share the following information with members about the withdrawal of e11 type approval certificates. This impacts any manufacturer still holding and actively using an e11 approval which they obtained prior to the UK leaving the EU and which was based on EU legislation.
Please note this does not include e11 approvals to UNECE Regulations, nor does it impact any EU approvals obtained through VCA as a technical service to another EU authority, such as STA, as these would be e5 approvals.
Outcome of Ukraine driving licence exchange consultation
Following a consultation on extending the period for which a Ukrainian driving licence can be used to drive a car in the UK, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced that it will enact legislative changes to ensure that Ukrainian refugees can drive in Great Britain for three years, as opposed to one, before needing a UK driving licence. This is in line with the Ukrainian visa schemes.
