Government announce support for UK SAF Industry

The UK government has announced the implementation of a revenue certainty programme to boost SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) production in the UK. As part of the Energy Bill, the government has tabled legislation that will launch a consultation on options for designing and implementing the scheme.

According to the UK government, the initiative will help it meet its goal of having at least five commercial SAF plants under development in the UK by 2025.

In addition, in conjunction with the implementation of a SAF mandate in 2025, the UK government claims the initiative will ensure fuel security, boost the economy, and contribute to the creation of over 10,000 jobs by 2030, rising to 60,000 by 2050.

“Logistics UK supports the government’s Net Zero ambitions, including the SAF mandate of 10% by 2030,” said Ellis Shelton, Policy Advisor at Logistics UK.

“We work closely with our members to promote their own decarbonisation efforts, including through our Route to Net Zero campaign. Aviation decarbonisation is still exceptionally difficult, with an expectation that carbon offsetting and carbon capture and storage will be required to meet the 2050 target.

“However, SAF is currently available and can reduce aircraft emissions by 70%. Therefore, it is promising to see UK Government implementing a programme to incentivise and support the domestic production of SAF.

“To reduce its cost and increase its availability and uptake, it is pivotal that SAF is produced here in the UK.”
