TfL offers micro businesses up to £9.5k for polluting vans
With the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) looming large on the horizon, the Mayor of London has launched a new £110m scrappage scheme providing financial assistance to help eligible Londoners scrap their highest polluting vehicles.
Scheduled to launch on 29 August 2023, the expanded ULEZ will apply across all London boroughs, covering most of the land that lies within the M25 orbital motorway.
Van operators that work within the 32 boroughs of London or the City of London may be eligible for a grant payment of £5,000-£9,500, if they are classed as a sole trader, registered charity or micro business (up to 10 employees). Operators may only apply for a grant payment to scrap or retrofit a vehicle if it does not meet the ULEZ emissions standard.
Denise Beedell, Senior Policy Manager, Logistics UK, said: “Logistics UK applauds the Mayor’s ambition to clean the air in London, but there is no doubt that expanding the ULEZ will place an additional cost burden on logistics businesses operating in the capital, which will particularly affect smaller operators. So while we welcome TfL’s ULEZ van and minibus scrappage scheme, which offers grants for the smallest businesses, for SMEs with 11 or more employees there is currently no help available. We would urge TfL to loosen the currently narrow criteria for the ULEZ van and minibus scrappage scheme to enable a broader range of businesses to access help transitioning their fleet to greener vehicles.”
