First van MOT test to remain at three years from registration and annually thereafter
The Department for Transport (DfT) has confirmed that the first MOT for cars, vans and motorcycles will remain at three years from registration and annually thereafter.
“The DfT sought views on proposals to change this in a consultation last year and received 4,500 responses, with 84% opposed to changing the date of the first test,” says Phil Lloyd, Head of Engineering Policy at Logistics UK.
“The DfT has also said it will be working with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) on a trial of the relevant machines for measuring particles, and will look at how to adapt the MOT test for new technologies: electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated vehicles.”
In related news, from 29 April DVSA will be introducing a digital-first approach for annual test certificates for both HGV and PSV testing.
DVSA will stop printing MOT pass certificates, by default, at the time of the test.

Second ‘Tiger Crossing’ completed in Portsmouth
The safety of people walking and cycling in Portsmouth has been improved with the completion of the second 'Tiger Crossing' on Victoria Road North, marking another milestone in the city's East West Active Corridor scheme.
This crossing, like the one on Fawcett Road, will allow cyclists and pedestrians to cross the junction safely.
Improvements to the area also include a narrower approach to the roundabout, cycle ramps and dropped kerbs for cyclists and pedestrians to increase safety, as well as new plants and benches to make the area more pleasant.
These follow improvements on Goldsmith Avenue, including a cycle lane protected by bollards and new crossings for people getting to Fratton railway station, Fratton Park, and nearby shops.
Further phases of this project are planned for completion by March 2024.
