Logistics UK hosts roundtable with Shadow Transport Minister

On Tuesday 12 December, Logistics UK hosted a breakfast roundtable with Bill Esterson MP, Shadow Transport Minister with responsibility for roads and logistics. The session was chaired by Logistics UK CEO David Wells OBE.

The shadow minister kicked off the discussion by championing logistics and describing how critical the sector is to the UK economy. Members heard about Labour’s plans to develop an industrial strategy to create economic growth, build market confidence and deliver more resilient supply chains.

At the meeting members had the opportunity to ask questions on Labour’s plans to work with the logistics industry, should it form the next government.

During the productive gathering, participants at the event called for the following: investment in infrastructure to improve resilience; increased resourcing and upskilling in local authority planning departments to ensure the timely delivery of essential logistics infrastructure; delivery of charging and grid infrastructure for electric vehicles as well as support for low carbon fuels and recognition of the role they will play in the transition; reform to skills funding to enable Apprenticeship Levy funds to be used for a wider range of training; engagement on the future of road user charging with calls for any scheme to be national, resolving the current patchwork of local rules and being designed with logistics in mind.

This was the third time we have hosted the Bill Esterson this year, and the first time since he took on his new role as a shadow transport minister. As a shadow minister for business, he delivered the keynote speech at our Next Generation Van conference and a meeting of our President's Council earlier this year.

In his concluding remarks on 12 December, the shadow transport minister said that he wants to keep the dialogue going and Logistics UK will continue to push for progress on these important issues to realise the industry’s full potential.
