Obstructive Sleep Apnoea - Training Support Materials

In February 2012, FTA carried out a survey to provide an initial assessment of industry awareness of the condition. Since the survey was carried out, we have been proactively increasing understanding and knowledge of the condition via member briefing sessions and the Driver CPC.

FTA Skills Working Group and the OSA Partnership Group have worked together to produce a training resource for organisations to help raise awareness of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) and to address the road safety issues associated with the condition.

OSA is a condition that affects breathing whilst sleeping due to a narrowing or total closure of the airway.  This results in disturbed sleep, although most individuals are likely to be unaware of this disturbance and leads to symptoms such as excessive daytime sleepiness.

One of the key objectives of these training support materials is to encourage a more open approach regarding driver concerns about OSA. The materials contain useful information and guidance for commercial drivers on what to do if they suspect symptoms of OSA or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS).

“We hope that the programme that we have developed with the FTA will allow drivers to recognise OSA in themselves or others and to act upon this knowledge to seek treatment, and in doing so to improve dramatically the quality of their lives.”
Professor John Stradling from the OSA Partnership Group

The training resources have background information for trainers to provide a comprehensive training session for drivers lasting approximately one hour and have been specially designed to fit into any training sessions such as Driver CPC training and tool-box talks.
