FTA RSS feeds

What is RSS?
RSS is an easy way for you to keep updated automatically on websites you like. Instead of you having to go to websites to see if they've written a new article or feature, you can use RSS (which stands for Really Simple Syndication) to get them to tell you every time they have something new.

Further information on RSS can found in the Wikipedia.

How do I put an RSS feed on my desktop?
There are a range of different news readers available. Different news readers work on different operating systems, so you will need to take this into account when you make your choice. A comprehensive list of news readers can be found in the Wikipedia.

If you are an Outlook or Outlook Express user you can use RSS Popper - a free add-in that that delivers your RSS feeds as emails.

RSS Popper setup instructions

To install RSS Popper, follow the on-screen instructions.

In Outlook, an RSS Popper toolbar should appear. (see below). Make sure you have enabled RSS. (RSS is ON)

RSS Popper toolbar

Click on RSS Popper and select Edit Feeds.

Click on New >> button.

RSS setup

In the Link text box, type "http://www.fta.co.uk/news/fta-enews/rss/"

Under the Authentication tab, enter your FTA username and password and click OK.

How do I access a password protected RSS feed?
You subscribe to the feed passing your username and password in the URL in this form:

http://username:password@www.fta.co.uk/news/fta-enews/rss/

As the FTA username is an email address, encoding must be applied to the username. The at-sign in the e-mail address must be encoded, but the at-sign that is part of the URI must not be encoded. An at-sign (@) is encoded as %40. For example:

http://someone%40example.com:password@www.fta.co.uk/news/fta-enews/rss/

Do I need permission to put one of your feeds on our website?
We invite any site with a genuine interest in freight issues to use our feeds. They shouldn't be altered to remove any information (including, of course, the source information and our logo). While not required, we would appreciate it if you could send us an e-mail at press.office@fta.co.uk and let us know you're using one. We reserve the right to request that a site remove a feed if we feel it is being used inappropriately.

How do I put one of your feeds on my website?
You'll need software to process and parse the data so it displays properly within a web browser (without it, all your users will see is raw XML). Unfortunately we are unable to offer technical assistance on processing XML. However, there are a number of websites with details on working with RSS files as well as links to tools, including O'Reilly Network's RSS Development Center, Blogspace's RSS Info page and Internet.com's WebReference.
