Sea freight accounts for 95 per cent of UK imports and exports by tonnage. Sea freight also plays an important role in domestic freight movements - getting freight closer to its destination by more environmentally friendly means.
The state of ports
The competitive nature of the UK's ports has benefited the UK economy and made services more customer-focused and efficient.
However, the UK's major ports are increasingly congested and as limits are reached, goods will have to re-route to less convenient ports, or won’t be able to arrive at all – both of which will hurt the UK economy.
