Abnormal loads - Gade Valley Viaduct

Diversion for abnormal loads

Following structural monitoring of the Gade Valley Viaduct, Highways England has informed FTA that no abnormal loads are permitted to use that section of the main carriageway of the M25 in either direction due to a weakness in the structure. The viaduct is located to the north-east of M25 junction 20. Abnormal loads were previously restricted to 80 tonnes on this section; these vehicles are now advised to travel (subject to application approval from Connect Plus Services and Hertfordshire County Council) via the diversion route as shown on the map and as described below

Travelling M25 anti-clockwise

  • Leave M25 at junction 21a
  • At the roundabout take the first exit for A405 North Orbital Road
  • Continue on the A405 North Orbital Road
  • At the A405/A41 roundabout take the second exit onto A41/N Western Avenue
  • Continue on the A41/N Western Avenue
  • At the next roundabout (junction 19 M25) take the entry slip for M25

Travelling M25 clockwise

  • Take junction 19 of the M25
  • At the roundabout take the second exit, continue on A41/N Western Avenue
  • Take the exit slip for A405 and then keep right (at the fork in the road) for the A405
  • At the roundabout take the second exit, continue on the A405 North Orbital Road
  • Continue on A405 North Orbital Road towards M25
  • At the roundabout take the third exit for M25 towards Stansted
