Abnormal loads - Gade Valley Viaduct

The Gade Valley Viaduct (between M25 junction 20 - A41/Hunton Bridge - and junction 21a - A405/St Albans) is currently being managed as a sub-standard structure and a weight restriction of 44 tonnes is in place to manage loading under normal traffic conditions during interim works to the structure.

Further phased remedial and joint replacement works have been planned and will be delivered over the next two years to maintain the integrity of the structure, and during this time, the following restrictions will be put in place as follows:

  • A weight restriction of 80 tonnes (individual vehicle gross weight) will be in place 24 hours a day on both carriageways of the M25 motorway between junctions 20 and 21a. Any vehicles above the stated load (80 tonnes gross weight) must use the M25 in the opposite direction to avoid the aforementioned section of carriageway and the associated weight restrictions, or apply to Connect Plus Services for review and assessment, giving the required notice period
  • Special Order vehicles and Abnormal Indivisible Loads must use the M25 in the opposite direction to avoid the aforementioned section of carriageway and the associated weight restrictions, or apply to Connect Plus Services for review and assessment, giving the required notice period. These vehicles, if permitted to travel on the structure, will require a closure of the structure and will be required to travel in a restricted position. It is unlikely that vehicles will be permitted to join the M25 at junction 20 heading east or leave the M25 at junction 20 heading west

As with all major construction projects there is a potential for unforeseen circumstances to affect the progress of the programme.
