Brexit high on agenda as FTA Transport Manager gets underway

Wednesday 14 September 2016

The Freight Transport Association’s Transport Manager conference series sponsored by Iveco got underway in Chepstow today with a topical programme including discussion on how Brexit will affect the logistics industry and what EU legislation should be retained or scrapped.

Traffic Commissioner for Wales, Nick Jones, outlined his department’s new traffic area responsibilities and highlighted licensing priorities for 2017 while DVSA’s Alan Coombes explained the concept of Earned Recognition.

Delegates received new advice from FTA about O Licence safety obligations and learned about existing and proposed industry accreditation schemes. And FTA’s Head of Engineering Andy Mair offered tips on how to prevent trucks causing incidents that close motorways, such as shed loads, fuel spillages and tyre blow-outs.

FTA Deputy Chief Executive James Hookham said: “This year’s programme focuses on key issues that transport managers need to be looking at over the coming months. Brexit is the burning platform and FTA is holding monthly webinars for members to keep them updated, but while we’re still in the EU it’s business as usual.

“Keeping up to date with current legislation is vital to enable transport managers to run an efficient and compliant operation – FTA’s Transport Manager conferences are the best way for them to ensure they’re ahead of the game.”

FTA Transport Manager, which is supported by Goodyear Tyres and Microlise, runs until December at venues throughout the UK, and giving transport managers and those in charge of road transport fleets the opportunity to hear from key industry speakers and experts.
