FTA to discuss UK airport capacity at Multimodal

Tuesday 03 May 2016

The future of airports in the UK will be one of the subjects under discussion at the Freight Transport Association’s seminar day at this year’s Multimodal. Multimodal is the UK and Ireland’s leading freight transport and logistics exhibition, and FTA will be hosting a series of sessions on Wednesday 11 May – the second day of the show.

Air freight accounts for around 40 per cent of UK imports and exports by value, and by 2050 all airports servicing London will have reached full capacity, even if either the proposed Gatwick or Heathrow expansions go ahead. The session will discuss whether more capacity is needed, and what the options are.

Speakers include Nick Platts, Head of Cargo, Heathrow; Mark Olney, GM Cargo, Europe, Middle East, India & Africa, Air Canada Cargo; Larry Coyne, CEO, Coyne Airways Ltd; Neil Robinson, Director of Sustainability, The Manchester Airports Group; and Alex Veitch, Head of Global Policy, FTA.

Alex Veitch said: “Aviation capacity is one of the key issues affecting the freight sector in the UK. This session will discuss the next steps following the Airports Commission report and explore the role of air cargo in the capacity debate."

Other subjects to be covered during the FTA seminars include The impact of mega shipping vessels and maritime alliances; The Agenda for More Rail Freight – next steps; Responding to environmental challenges in transport; and Making the most of the Northern Powerhouse.

A series of FTA workshops will take place in the workshop theatre on Contracts of carriage; the EU’s new Union Customs Code explained; Container weighing - understanding the new legislation and best practice; and the Home Office Haulier Security Accreditation Scheme.

Visitors are also welcome to the FTA stand (number 1255) at Multimodal, which takes place between 10 and 12 May. FTA will be at the show to discuss all aspects of its activities in supporting national, European and global supply chains.

FTA and Multimodal have also joined forces to launch new awards categories in the rebranded 'FTA Multimodal Awards', celebrating achievements in all transport modes, including the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme Award in Leadership in Carbon Reduction sponsored by Bridgestone. The FTA Multimodal Awards Night will be held at the amazing VOX at Resorts World at the NEC and will be hosted by renowned broadcaster and journalist, John Sergeant.
