Radlett rail freight terminal good for business Mon Dec 24 14:35:00 GMT 2012

"Rail freight terminals are the freight network’s equivalent of passenger stations: so this decision is a good Christmas present for the freight industry and helps modal shift and the environment."

Chris MacRae, FTA's Rail Freight Policyu Manager

The Freight Transport Association is pleased to learn that the go-ahead for a rail freight terminal near Radlett has been given, as FTA realises the need for more intermodal rail freight terminals. The green light was given to the building of the Hertfordshire terminal by Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles, a decision that the Association believes to be good news for rail freight and modal shift to less polluting means of transport, and good for economic growth.

FTA's Rail Freight Council has helped develop policy documentation on rail freight terminals which recognised the requirement for more terminals in London and the South East of England. It also showed that the development of a network of rail freight terminals would be essential to help achieve the potential of the investment that the government is making to enhance the rail network for freight.

The need for further rail freight terminals was also recognised within an FTA study – 'On Track!' – which was compiled by the Association which worked with leading retailers to help them identify opportunities to move road-based logistics flows on to rail. The study showed that a significant and growing volume of goods sold in high street stores and supermarkets is being regularly moved by rail and retailers are reaping major efficiency and environmental benefits by doing so.

Within the 'On Track' report the needs of retailers were identified and included:

  • More freight terminals and more routes
  • Faster processing for new rail paths
  • More frequent services to encourage retailers
  • The potential to expand train capacity
  • New developments: more lines, more railheads

Chris MacRae, FTA's Rail Freight Policy Manager commented:
