The European Commission (EC) has put urban mobility on the agenda as part of its overall Transport Policy. However different European cities are, they all share similar transport challenges such as congestion, road safety, security, pollution and climate change. The European Commission believes that its Transport Policy is incomplete without the inclusion of urban transport.
In mid 2007, the EC published a Green Paper entitled 'Towards a new culture for Urban Mobility' to address the main challenges related to urban mobility by five key themes:
The Green Paper recognises that freight logistics has an urban dimension and an urban mobility policy must cover both passenger and freight transport.
FTA welcomes the views included in the Green Paper that urban freight distribution should be better integrated within local policy-making and institutional settings, and that local authorities should consider all urban logistics related to both passenger and freight transport as a single logistics system.
FTA has met with EC representatives in Brussels to discuss the Green Paper who have categorically stated that freight distribution in urban areas is essential to the growth of local economies.
