Fuel duty campaign

In his Pre Budget Statement on 24 November 2008, the Chancellor, Alistair Darling announced an increase in fuel duty of 2 pence per litre (ppl), effective from 1 December 2008. In addition, he announced that duty will rise again in April by 1.84ppl. This will land the UK logistics industry with a massive £533 million tax increase.

FTA has already demanded an urgent meeting with the Chancellor and the Prime Minister to seek a reversal of this decision for commercial vehicle operators. We will also continue to work hard on your behalf in the media and with other politicians to explain not only the cost to business but, ultimately, the cost to consumers too.

But we also need your help

  • Write to your MP using our quick and easy template - remember MPs are elected to represent their constituents, so make sure your voice is heard
  • Tell us your story. FTA is always looking for examples to share with the media to highlight the impact the Chancellor's decisions are having on our members. Should you wish to, you can choose to remain anonymous too. Contact Liam Northfield lnorthfield@fta.co.uk for further details

  • Invite your local MP to visit your business to see first-hand what you do and how you will be affected by this tax hike. If you would like any assistance with this, please email jtanner@fta.co.uk

You can also get involved in FTA's decision-making process by attending Regional Freight Council meetings. For details on FTA Regional and National Councils, click here.
