Even before the Chancellor's announcement on 24 November, running costs for the UK logistics industry were eight per cent higher than the EU average. Higher levels of fuel duty and greater staff costs put the UK at a competitive disadvantage compared to European operators.
Following the Pre Budget Report, FTA has demanded an urgent meeting with the Chancellor and the Prime Minister to discuss the detrimental impact on the logistics industry. At that meeting, we will revisit the arguments put forward in the FTA-commissioned PricewaterhouseCoopers report, outlining the business case for a fuel duty rebate for commercial vehicle operators.
We are also working closely with MPs across the political spectrum to bring these arguments to Parliament. We also continue to work with the media to get our messages across to the public, to help them understand that increased transport costs will ultimately be passed on to them through higher prices in the shops.
But we cannot do this alone. FTA members can also help. Click here to find out how.
