Celebrate carbon reduction success with the LCRS Awards

Posted on: Monday, 8 October 2012 by Rachael Dillon

Recently the inaugural LCRS Awards were launched at FTA's Fleet Engineer Conference. The awards, a first for the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS), will celebrate the individual efforts of LCRS members to reduce their carbon emissions from freight activity.

The LCRS has been running for nearly three years, enabling freight operators to record, report and reduce carbon emissions through a collective industry scheme. Currently, the scheme has 68 members of all sizes accounting for more than 58,000 commercial vehicles. Members include DHL, Wincanton, Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda, Boots and John Lewis Partnership, as well as smaller operators, waste companies and local authorities. Whilst the scheme tracks progress at an aggregated level, the LCRS Awards gives members a platform to profile their individual efforts to improve efficiency and reduce carbon. The awards also offer the LCRS a great opportunity to showcase the wide range of carbon reduction actions and initiatives being undertaken by members to industry stakeholders and the public.

There are four LCRS Award categories to choose from and our first award is sponsored by LCRS partner, Bridgestone Tyres.

  • Carbon reduction through fuel efficiency (sponsored by Bridgestone Tyres) - for example, have you implemented a driver training programme which has delivered successful results to improve your miles per gallon?
  • Carbon reduction through innovative fleet management - perhaps you have reconfigured your fleet operations to improve efficiency and reduce fuel costs? Or have you sought to improve vehicle fill and reduce empty running?
  • Carbon reduction through use of low carbon transport mode - is your company working to put loads onto rail or water to reduce road miles?
  • Carbon reduction through use of alternative low carbon fuels and hgv technologies - for instance, have you trialled or utilised biogas, sustainable biodiesels or hybrid/electric vehicles to reduce carbon emissions?

LCRS members can select one or more of the above categories to enter. So if you think you have a green intiative, why not enter? Visit the environment pages of our website for more details including the awards criteria and rules to complete your application. Entry is only open to LCRS members, so if you haven't joined yet, why not do so now? It is free to take part and the data requirements are simple whether you have five vehicles or five hundred. If you have any questions about the scheme or the Awards, email me.

The closing date for LCRS Award entries is 25 January 2013 and the awards will be presented at FTA's annual Logistics Carbon Reduction Conference in May. Good luck!
