FTA shines in the Brighton rain at the Lib Dem conference

Amidst the driving rain currently pouring down across Britain, FTA joined thousands of conference-goers braving the weather at the Liberal Democrat party conference in Brighton.

The delegation from FTA had three main functions down on the south coast - hosting their own fringe event with The Times on "Sharing the Road Safely" as part of the Association's management of the pioneering Transport Hub; working with Cemex to promote the "Exchanging Places" cycle safety demonstration and the traditional programme of meeting politicians to discuss the key policy issues of the day.

The fringe event was very well attended and cut to the heart in particular of the relationship between lorries and cyclists on the road. FTA drew praise for the constructive approach taken by the Association and its members to engage with the cycling community and finding practical solutions from Cambridge's Lib Dem MP Julian Huppert, appearing on the panel with representatives of CTC and the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Unfortunately, to a degree, the effectiveness of the Exchanging Places vehicle was blunted by the tempest raging outside; however FTA was able to have a chat and a photo with the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg MP, and Transport Minister Norman Baker was given the full tour of safety features in the striking Union flag-painted cement mixer.

Finally, FTA had useful meetings and conversations with a range of politicians, including Transport Committee member John Leech MP on aviation, transport taxes and the Committee's forward work programme. Following the success of the Olympics from a logistics perspective, Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee Caroline Pidgeon AM sat down wtih FTA to talk London, night-time deliveries and the environment.

FTA will be at the Labour conference in Manchester this weekend, and would encourage anyone to join them for the next "Sharing the Road Safely" event at the Radisson Blu's Harty Room at 1pm on Monday (1 October).

Pictures of the Lib Dem conference will follow shortly.
