A chat with Jessica about Morden just the Severn

Posted on: Wednesday, 15 August 2012 by Mike Webb

FTA was in Newport yesterday to meet with local MP Jessica Morden.

A familiar figure to everyone involved with FTA's work in Wales, and an active member of the House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee, she has been one of the most prominent voices calling for reform of the tolling arrangements on the Severn Crossing.

FTA set out to her the dual concerns held, both that the Westminster Government has no plan for when the Crossings revert to Government ownership in 2018; and that the Welsh Government has established its ideal level of rate for the toll to finance borrowing powers and has never revealed what that rate may be.

However, there are multiple other issues affecting our members in Wales, and one of the key ones with a direct impact on Newport is the future development of the M4. The recent fire in the Brynglas tunnel has demonstrated the vulnerability of this vital supply route and FTA looks forward to the Government development plan following the recent consultation.

There was also an opportunity to discuss environmental issues - to showcase the possibilities for emissions reduction provided by the Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme and a presentation on telematics from FTA member Owens Roads Services, who have a significant presence in Newport..

FTA thanks Jessica Morden and Owens for their time; there is plenty of work still to be done on these issues and regular blog readers will be kept up to date here on how FTA is moving things forward.
