Day 5: Manchester to Chester, 52 miles

Posted on: Monday, 13 June 2011 by Toby Carroll in category Cycle ride

Saturday proved a late start for the 8 riders who had to relocate their cars 3 times before finding a suitable place to leave them. As a result we had a delayed arrival at DHL Trafford Park and the ride didn't start until 11 am.

We were delighted to be able to share the 17th wedding anniversary of John and Wendy. They'd travelled down from Cockermouth to be with us the night before and had a 2.5 hour journey back the following day - true commitment and a great couple to spend the day with.

Beautiful route

Andrew (Rapha) Woolfall and Scott Bell joined us from Backhouse Jones and set a superb route through wonderful quiet roads in Cheshire. Whilst we started in industrial Trafford Park and finished in Industrial Stanlow the rest of the ride after the first 5 miles of west Manchester was superb and a credit to the guys.

James gave 110% in completing the course. He looked unlikely to finish after 18 miles but he perked up once he started wearing Wendy’s leg warmers - possibly the energy gels also helped. He'll be sore on Sunday morning, having done well to stick with the pace.

Scott led from the starting gun and rode the whole ride in the big ring, determined to tone up for a big off road ride he and Andy are doing next week. He was probably also hoping to get back home to Clitheroe for his scheduled stag night - we conspired to ensure that didn't happen.

A slice of anniversary cake

At our second stop in the Delamere Forest we all consumed a large cake to celebrate John and Wendy’s anniversary before heading back towards Stanlow for the last 18 miles.

Then on to Holyhead for the Dublin ferry - the scheduled arrival time mysteriously moved out from 11.30 to 1.30. Just a minor slip of the pen Nikki!! We'll probably get 4 hours kip tonight- worse than the Tour de France transfers.
