Day 3: Brecon to Cardiff, 52 miles

Transaid cycle: taking a breatherThere was a very good turnout in Wales with a strong show from the International Greetings team. 19 riders turned out at Brecon, where we split into two groups: a road group of 5 and the rest on mountain bikes who followed the Taff trail all the way to Cardiff Museum where we were met by Gill Sheddick with tea and Welsh cakes.

A challenging ride

Leading the pace was Geraint Davies who was determined to head the mountain bike team into Cardiff, so determined in fact that they rode straight through the planned lunch stop at Merthyr.

The road team faced a very steep hill 15 miles in at Torpantau/ 7 mile Bank. Stewart and bike hitched a lift on Vince Brickley’s trailer whilst Chris, Nikki, Andy Williams and Huw Salway rode to the top of one of Britain’s top 100 climbs.

The General Classification

After 3 days Chris and Nikki are tying for the lead in the General Classification. Huw’s local knowledge was much appreciated by the road team and he led us back from Merthyr at a healthy pace until we rejoined the cycle track. All in all, the ride totalled 49 miles for the road team and 50 miles for the off road team.

Today was breezy, cloudy and cool so we were all wearing jackets etc although Huw Salway described it as a good day’s weather for South Wales.

Full marks to Ian Gallagher who got his trusty steed back out and having done repairs overnight joined at Merthyr and rode back in to Cardiff at which point the sun came out as we set off to Worcester for the Day 4 event.

Another impressive effort from cycling ambassador Gordon Telling who will make tomorrow his last day before he rejoins for the last 3 but is deep in thought as to whether he can make Ireland for days 6 and 7.Transaid cycle: riding along the canal

A well organised ride

Great organisation from Vince, our Regional Chairman who has gone to great lengths to ensure he accommodated two very different groups’ needs with fantastic signage and terrific organisation… and he completed the event in style riding into Cardiff on his Brompton - shame we didn't capture a picture of that - or did we? Check out the website early next week.
