New DfT Ministers: Theresa Villiers

Posted on: Thursday, 13 May 2010 by Mike Webb in categories Media and campaigns, Westminster

Yesterday we looked at the new Secretary of State for Transport, Philip Hammond. Today we turn attention to the new Minister of State, Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers.

His Department’s Minister of State is the only member of the pre-election Conservative Shadow Transport team to find herself working in the Department after the election. A former law lecturer and MEP, Mrs Villiers rose to the Shadow Cabinet, preceding Mr Hammond as Shadow Chief Secretary. She was Shadow Transport Secretary for almost three years before the election, and is known as a passionate advocate for rail, particularly high-speed. She was therefore an obvious choice to look after the rail brief. She will also be responsible for international and European issues, in which she has considerable experience, as well as aviation and transport issues relating to the Olympics.
