New DFT Ministers: Norman Baker

Having looked at the new Secretary of State and Minister of State, we turn our attention to the first of two junior ministers at the DfT. On this occasion, it is a man who is well-known to all in transport circles, Norman Baker,

One of the conditions of the new Government is that every department must have at least one Liberal Democrat, and Lewes MP Norman Baker is the relevant man at the DfT. Mr Baker was Lib Dem Transport Spokesman for half of the previous parliament, and has brought the energy for which he is well-renowned in Westminster to bear in championing rail expansion and greater provision of public transport. In among his many portfolio responsibilities in the new Government, Mr Baker is responsible for what is known as “local transport” – buses, trams, walking, cycling and parking issues. The forthcoming review of Local Transport Plans presents him with an early chance to make his mark.
