New DfT Ministers: Mike Penning

Posted on: Saturday, 15 May 2010 by Mike Webb in categories Media and campaigns, Westminster

We conclude our daily look at the new ministers at Great Minster House with an introduction to the new man charged with looking after freight; Mike Penning MP.

The final piece of the DfT ministerial jigsaw is Hemel Hempstead’s Mike Penning. A man with an unusually eclectic CV, Mr Penning is anything but the typical career politician. Crucially, he is the man charged with looking after the freight network. After school, Mr Penning served as a Grenadier guard, before becoming a fireman upon returning to civilian life. Having run his family business, which gave him hands-on experience of moving goods, he eventually became a political journalist before joining Parliament in 2005. He will be responsible, as well as freight, for maritime issues, road safety and the road-based executive agencies, such as the DVLA and VOSA.

FTA wishes all four new ministers well in their new roles, and looks forward to a productive and mutually helpful relationship with them in their time at Great Minster House.
