Ports as essential freight gateways

  • As the UK’s economy grows and attracts more international trade, ports are seeing a growth in freight fl ows. This is demonstrated by the growth in volumes of goods and containerised traffi c moving through the ports. In terms of million tonnes of freight, foreign imports have increased 34 per cent over the last decade whereas the volume of foreign exports has fallen by four per cent over the same period
  • The number of containers and lgvs coming into UK ports has increased by 46 and 59 per cent respectively between 1993 and 2003

Between 1985 and 2006 the volume of imports moving through UK ports has increased by 80 per cent and the volume of exports has increased by 13 per cent
