Delivering goods safely
- Commercial vehicles are among the safest vehicles on the road.
The total number of road accidents (all severities) fell by 19 per cent
between 1996 and 2006 to 189,161. Lgv accident involvement rate
has fallen by 25 per cent over the same period

- Out of all UK industry categories the transport and communications
sector had the third highest injury rate to employees in 2005/6 at
1,500 non-fatal injuries per 100,000 people. Lorries have to deliver
and collect goods from many locations that are potentially hazardous.
Typical accidents involve slips, trips and falls
Foreign vehicles are more likely to be overloaded and drivers more likely
to be in breach of EU drivers’ hours rules than their UK counterparts
Lgvs stopped at roadside by UK Vehicle Operation Services Agency (VOSA):
per cent issued with prohibition notices for drivers’ hours and overloading offences
